Setting up Relationships in your Database

One-to-One Relationship

One record relates to one record in another table.

Many-to-One Relationship

Many records relate to one record in another table. i.e. the field State can have many appearances in the Customer Table since many customers can live in the same state. However, it will only be found once in the States Table.

One-to-Many Relationship

One record relates to many records in another table. ie. One customer from the Customer Table can relate to several records in the Order Table since a client might places more than one order.

Many-to-Many Relationship

Many records in one table relate to many records in another table. i.e. in a Book Collection Database it is possible to have more than one author working on a book and more than one book associated with each author.
